Imagine this - the ability to play your favourite arena shooter game... IN BROWSER, no download needed!

It's not an invite only closed beta from 2008, but apparently a Docker container.

This project is a non-commercial fan implementation and is not affiliated with or endorsed by id Software or ZeniMax Media. “Quake III Arena” and related trademarks are the property of their respective owners.

Only the officially released Quake III Arena demo data files are used. No full retail game assets are hosted, included, or required; all gameplay content is limited to files that id Software made publicly available for free.

The engine is based on ioquake3, an open-source project licensed under GPLv2. In accordance with the license, the source code for the modified ioquake3 WebAssembly build and supporting glue code is available upon request.

I put together a prototype for an online multiplayer FPS game which revolves around real world factions and divisions.



Obviously everything would look a lot better with dedicated talent, but the main idea behind it was to have a game where players align to their real world alliances and do battle against their real world enemies.

I don't know if anything will come of it, its just something I wanted to put out there as I worked on it in my spare time.

My main question is, and trolling aside, do you like the idea of playing a game where your team mates are people you are aligned with in the real world on big world issues and your opposition are people who you dislike?

And of course it would have FFA type things too, but it makes more sense as a team game.

It really daunting looking at the visual quality of games like BF6, but its 400 million dollar game with about 6,000 staff.

I'm personally bored of so many games these days, so I wanted to bypass legacy rulesets for how games are made.
Arbitrary teams and factions etc, that don't really mean much, and bring in low level emotions and then build a game around that.

Some of the other players are also playing QL at the moment, such as cha0ticz I believe, however, it is nowhere near the competitive scene and as such a comeback could be in order. If Makaveli has made a comeback to the competitive scene and I missed it then he should be removed though :)

There's also the russian makaveli, don't know which one the poll is refering too. But the russian makaveli was really good.

Best CPM player in the US a few years ago, he played in the CXG and did really good (he had to play cooller in the WB finals but the even was shut down iirc) then disappeared a few years later and his family came here searching for help.

Lost to cooller in the WB Semi final 2-1 (Won pro-q3dm6 if I recall correctly). Cooller then beat ZeRo4 in the WB Final 2-1 but the event was shut-down before the LB final between ZeRo4 and elp could be played (I think).

I think he was at QLAN2 as well.

the event was shut-down before the LB final between ZeRo4 and elp could be played (I think).
They started playing T4 and when the score was 8-8 between them as network died for good. The organizers didn't care anymore at that point but the players wanted to proceed, regardless of the cash (which was never payed out in the end). So they connected Zero4s computer directly to elpajuo, however, the organizers then proceeded to shut down all power as well, so there wasn't much for them to do.

Hence all three, cooller, z4 and elpajuo are considered tied as #1 for that event.

That's not how I remember it, I'm quite sure they all considered themselves as tied #1 and decided to split all money and hardware.

Why would z4 be ahead of elpajuo when they only played one map which ended 8-8?

The final was to be between cooller and the winner of z4/elp (which was never finished). So how was z4 ranked ahead of elp? Regardless, you are mistaken, the official (and inofficial) results were as follows:

Because z4 was in the winner bracket final and elp was in the semi.

I recall them agreeing to share the money (whether it got paid or not) split 1. qlr 2. z4 3. elp.

But anyway, it doesn't really matter and there's next to no accurate coverage of cXg anywhere and the ESR search function is beyond hopeless.

I think he finished second at Qlan2 (cpm tournament).
Rat won, elpa 2nd, toxter third and snapcase fourth I think.

He played in the vq3 tournament also, but didn't do as well compared to the cpm one :)

Whenever I watched him move around, especially on DM6, he would do some things that seemed completely crazy or doomed to failure. They always seemed to pay off, though.

One time he did the standard bridge to rail and it seemed obvious he was going to miss. He managed to air-control himself over farther than seemed possible like it was nothing. Also he would regularly dive down onto players where it would seem they would shaft him to death before he hit ground but it never seemed to cause him any trouble.

I voted for PELE cus I remember watching his old demos and being in awe about his interesting style. Most people probably don't remember him. He played a lot like unkind, just years before unkind was in the scene. Really smart and killer rox.

I don't think there is enough $ out there to motivate most of these people back. When you get older and have more responsibilities, it is impossible to put in the time required to be a top tier quake player. You have to choose to either dedicate your time to a game that nobody follows or do something real with your life.

I slightly agree. Blue was really amazing in his prime q3 days, but his q4 days were not REALLY amazing. It was still nice to see him of course, but he couldn't threat the top players. I know he plays some QL, but just for fun I assume...

I would not call a year or two of inactivity, retirement. Even if it is technically retirement, as long as we've seen them not too much time ago, it's not enough to call it in a joy, the great return of the dark knight.
To be more specific, my daughter went down from our bed in the morning, and in the evening she was climbing it again, fully enthusiastic, I would not call what she was doing today, a truly retirement.

Didn't you read the Dreamhack part? :) It's the second biggest QL tournament if you count how many good players that are participating. Unfortunately I don't think he has enough time to prepare properly for it but will be great to see him in action again.

Hm, no I didn't. When is Dreamhack? It would be nice to go there and photograph for ESR :)

Edit: I found it, starts on my birthday, if I read it right, 26th of November. It will be fun to watch :)

Edit 2: I'm checking traveling costs to see if I can do it, it would have been awesome :D Specially since in 2002 or 2003 I ended up not being able to go to QLAN :)

now that's odd. i suggest to watch some of the old demos which clearly show that sl1nger was one of (if not THE) the key players in unmatched's (or SK's) success. i always felt that neok was the "weakest" individual player in that team. all in all those guys were awesome together and seeing them again would be a pleasure. especially from a german perspective since we pretty much only have k1llsen nowadays.

Kane was their "star" player, every time I've faced them he was always way ahead of the others. Even the maps they lost he was usually ahead of most of our players :)

I don't really use that account (that was my 1st and only game) as I like to play in peace/quiet and have a good time. That's what happens when you get old... you like quiet, haha! Especially sometimes when I come home in the evening after a few drinks...

I could always play Counter-strike when I had some liquor, but quake, oh boy... all over the place with some alcohol, haha.

I need to get rid of this monitor though... 25 ms response time and only 72 Hz LCD.... hehe -- I don't know how much it is gimping me, but from what I've been told, it is pretty bad.

I am trying to get Unholy, immortal, and some of my other friends to start playing again though.

czm of course - he was the SHIT! possibly the best allround Quake3 player of all time - tdm, cpm, 1v1 etc. Who could forget that T4 game he had against Aim (Ambix?) where he hit 3 pixel rails in a row from the bottom level to the top whilst Aim was stacked in sudden death overtime to win the game :) was awesome!
And didn't czm give Cooller his biggest defeat of his carreer on hub :)

Because they have been playing the same players and shithouse maps since the creation of the universe. However, I'll agree qw has superior fundamental gameplay and the top players would probably never switch to anything else. I just think it would be nice to see a guy of Reppies insane talents try something different.

I would go as far as saying that players like dag aren't as talented as some of the top players in QL.

When QW was the game, when it had players like DOOMer, Sniket, oKKun, Lakerman, Kane and so on, dag played at that time as well (I don't know if reppie or def played at that time but if they did they were so poor they weren't even known in the slightest then). However, dag, or dagurra as he was known as then, didn't stand a chance against those players, he was even at a lower level of play than me.

When all good players leave from a dead community, some lesser player is bound to take the #1 spot.

That goes for most of those current QW "stars", such as pietro, locktar, riker, xalibur, mrlane and so on. I do not even think they would disagree with me.

Dude, less talented? QW requires a different skillset altogether. Different strats, movement, weapons, it's hard to compare, even. Also, how can you know if the current "stars" of QW wouldn't catch up to the old masters even, if they did stay in the game?

I'd say, if they'd put in time and effort, some of them could become top contenders in QL.

I'm sorry, but that just doesn't make any sense. As much as I respect the oldschool players (They were the top when I started playing), they simply didn't play the same game as the game thats played today. Saying that Dag wasn't as good, because he peaked at a later stage in the games history - Is like saying that LakermaN was only good, because Thresh wasn't around anymore. But even back then the game had changed alot, from when Thresh was king to when LakermaN won TGI. LakermaN was part of the era where aim, speed, and the ability to do tricks became a major factor in the game, whereas the players from the previous era had relied much more on just tactics.

QuakeWorld have had numerous eras, and different kings for each era. Some have stayed on top throughout most of the game's lifespan, players like ParadokS, reppie, dag and griffin. And I'm sure players like that have/had the talent to be good in any game. Just like LakermaN showed, some people can just pick up a game and instantly be good.

Regarding the players you list as current "stars", only LocKtar and riker is around.

But I would agree, that most top qw players probably wouldn't do as good in QL, but thats more of an age/lack of time thing than it is talent. Also they would be lightyears behind the Quake3 players. If Nabbe had not been moved from the "Participating players" to the "Pending Players" list, for the QL tourney at DreamHack winter, we could have seen what a top qw player could do in QL - with limited practice.

There is nothing suggesting that Thresh was better than Lakerman, DOOMer or Sniket.

Did you watch 9 vs DR? I was there and watched it live and talked to the players. The first time EU and NA actually faced each other in QW/RQ, DR didn't do too well there (they even lost in their games vs IoP, another much less known medium-skilled Swedish team). Of course, while they were here Thresh also played 1v1s, losing games vs Xenon, DOOMer etc.

It's not like these current QW stars werent active at that point. Riker, mrlame, dagurra and so on played quite a bit yet wasn't even considered mediocre players in comparison to the likes of DOOMer or Lakerman.

I even played in the same team as Riker and mrlame, so I do know them as players more than most yet my opinion still holds true, they, just like me, werent as talented as players like Lakerman. It's simply easier to be amongst the best when the community size is 100 compared to 1 000 000, especially if you have a 10 year game advantage on all the new players.

You are ignoring the fact that most of the early star players in Quake were established Doom players. Doomer, Ettu, Lakerman, Thresh etc all played Doom multiplayer and came into Quake already holding a lot of FPS experience. It was no surprise they dominated early on. Just like in Q3 where all the early tournaments were won by veteran Q1 and Q2 players.

No offence dude, but you have no idea what you are talking about. Dag not being top notch when laker was playing doesn't prove anything. Different players have different motivations at different times. Pietro has been out of the scene for a looooong time. The players who have been at the top of the qw scene in recent years are very very skilled and would destroy laker at his previous form. There is no need to make comments when you clearly don't know anything about the subject.

Duel wise I don't think he has placed top3 in any tournament.

Though there are lots of players that you could argue would have a place in such a poll, Kane is the one that comes closest to mine. However, no matter where you draw the line, the will be cases close to the line that can be argued.

You can also vote on the "Someone else" option for such players though.

But I highly doubt that he would perform a comeback in a broken game and a watered down version of one of his favourite games, which lacks the ability to spawn LAN servers. By now he already must have realised that there's no future for a game as incomplete and undeveloped like QL.

And what else is there for people wanting fast gameplay and compete in 1on1 tourneys? Right, nothink!
