Hi guys, in preparation of the
CPM Masters Final, I decided to ask some of the players a few questions (let's just call it a mini-interview), in hopes of familiarizing the community with the participants. I did try to get in touch with all the players, but unfortunately did not get responses from everyone. However, a number of players did respond, providing for insightful, funny, and at times down right strange looks into our lovely community.
This tournament will commence this

Hi my name is Hussein I ibn Talal. I was born in small village that was glorifying Alljah the only and one god. This village was also skilled in training good q3 players. Many years passed, I have graduated from the training. Borrowed flying carped from Alladin and flew to Poland to teach new religion about only and one god Alljah and quake.

What is your gaming background? How did you get into playing CPM?
As I said earlier I got into quake3 at my training. At first we we're playing raw quake. I was about 10-11 yrs old. It was in internet cafe. Then after I got my own connection, friend from school introduced OSP mod to me. I liked the promode physic or pmx or whatever it was. So I started with CA/pm then tdm but tdm back then was played with vq3 physic. So I started to look for any mod with cpm tdm. End of story

When did you start playing CPM, and how were you introduced to it?
Dunno, about 2004-2005. And I was introduced to it by myself.

What do you like, and dislike, about CPM?
Well. I dislike the fact that you can't time items in cpm duel this is the only thing.

How would you describe your playing style? What are the advantages of playing with this style?
My playing style is wild :D I'm trying to hit those green keels.

What do you think the disadvantages, or weaknesses of your playing style are? And how do you compensate for these short-comings?
Hm... Certainly weakness of my playing style is the fact that if you miss those green keels - you die.

What maps would you say you have an advantage on, and what exactly separates you from the other players on this map?

LOL. Dunno, I haven't played most of players from 'old' era, so I can't say. And every each of them would pose big challenge to me.

I wouldn't. Everyone has their own play style and that's all.

What would your advice be for new players who have never seen CPMA before, or have had limited exposure to it?
Play more promode.

If you aren't familiar with quake you ain't got shit to do with me mister, but I'm funnyb/kANiN, 25 year old quaker from Sweden. I'm clearly who should be everyone’s tournament favourite since I'm so cute and cuddly.

What is your gaming background? How did you get into playing CPM?
I've always been a quaker, from day one. Even though I began in team fortress with QWTF and eventually Q3F and ETF, it has always been quake that has been my competitive area within gaming. CPM was just a natural switch from threewave back in '06 or so because cpm is friggin' awesome.

When did you start playing CPM, and how were you introduced to it?
I played in a threewave clan called leto, and they also had a cpm division led by
aggnog and his fellow chaps, and it just led to me trying the game out in a pickup or two, and loved it. The pace and variety of cpm has always suited me very well, so I was sold instantly.

What is your current computer setup? CPU? GFX Card? Monitor? Keyboard? Mouse?
Oh uhm, I'm bad at these things.. Thank god for Windows. i5-2500k CPU, gfx card iiis.. some nVidia one... a BenQ XL2411t monitor, razer blackwidow keyboard(ty faceit lol) and an e-bay bought WMO.
I also use a six year old cloth mouse pad with enough dead skin cells to feed an African child for a year. (warning: may contain traces of blood and cum )

What do you like, and dislike, about CPM?
This list could be made so long. What I enjoy the most, is that a sick variety of game styles is viable, without there for now being a solid no-brain counter to any one of them. Whilst people seem to think vq3/ql offers the same, it's really just not. Aggressive in QL is still a weak-ass version of being aggressive in cpm, while being a more passive and calm player is still rewarded in its own way.

How would you describe your playing style? What are the advantages of playing with this style?
As QL ruined me and my style of playing, I'm currently what I would asses to be a positional player depending on my aim and general reading skills. Yet though, one of the core strengths needed to win cpm duels is just like in vq3/ql, knowing when to speed up the game, and knowing when to slow down. Control means nothing if you don't do anything with it.
Advantages. I guess it's more of a low risk way of playing, Aggressiveness when successful will get you a lot of frags, but can also backfire and put you back the same amount of frags, I'd say I use the more conservative play style of the two.

What do you think the disadvantages, or weaknesses of your playing style are? And how do you compensate for these short-comings?
If I knew they wouldn't be shortcomings, as you can turn most knowledge into advantages.
8.
What maps would you say you have an advantage on, and what exactly separates you from the other players on this map?
I would say aerowalk(cpm22) is my strongest map, probably mostly due to experience. Before I even began playing QL it was my strongest map without a doubt, and even know that I face the game in a totally different way, I still feel far more comfortable there than on any other map.
This is also what I think separates me from most people here, a whale load of experience.

Who is your all-time favorite CPM player, and why? How did this player influence your playing style?
When I began playing duels a tad more seriously within cpm I played a lot with
dziku, whom I always respected a huge amount both as a person and as a player, he was my first real sparring partner within duel in any game, and I probably picked up a ton from that time without even realizing it.

What is your favourite game mode, and why?
TDM, because of the social aspect. Playing TDM with a team filled with nice and talented people beats anything really, by practice and experience achieve that unspoken team play, it just feels great.

What things do you think the community needs to develop, to help CPMA grow?
Less dicks.

There seems to "eras" of players ( rat, aph, and vo0, the early stages, koddy from mid-section, finally players like HAL, gaiia, and memphis in the current era). Where do you think you would fit, and which player, from any era, do you think would pose the greatest challenge to you, and why?
Mid-late is where I would fit in most, since I didn't even know duels in quake existed back when
rat,
aph, and
vo0 were at their peak. And greatest challenge to me.. How can I not say
HAL as he's what I consider my biggest threat as of this moment, not to discredit a lot of other talented duelers out there.

How would you describe the changes in playing style of the years?
In short, aim got stronger and stronger over the years, due to equipment, pings, net code and overall understanding, and players had to adapt.

What would your advice be for new players who have never seen CPMA before, or have had limited exposure to it?
Find yourself players close to your own skill to begin with, cpm is a game where a duel can end 80-0 if players are mixed up really bad.
15.
Overall, what are your expectations for this tournament?
I went into the qualifier with the same expectations as I'll go into the final with, none. I'm gonna play, enjoy myself, and go from there.

Who do you think will pose the biggest threat for you, and why?
HAL, because he's a freakin beast and is the one I'd say shares my aerowalk experience. Always tricky.

Hello! My name is Juuso 'gaiia' Mäkelä. I'm 20 years old and currently live in Tampere, Finland. (No, I'm not 14 anymore.. Sadly.)

What is your gaming background? How did you get into playing CPM?
I started playing games as a kid when my dad installed Bubble Bobble and some other crap on our Windows 3.1 PC. CPM was my first FPS game and I never looked back since.
3.
When did you start playing CPM, and how were you introduced to it?
I started playing CPM after watching a friend of
koddy's play some TDM clan matches with 'Rookies' back in 2005. At the time I didn't have an Internet connection at home, so I strictly played vs. bots and spent my days jumping around on various maps. In 2006-2007 I finally got Internet and was able to start getting stomped by players online.

What is your current computer setup? CPU? GFX Card? Monitor? Keyboard? Mouse?
My PC is almost 8 years old and I can barely get 125fps stable in Quake with it, so I think all the hardware details will interest no one.
I'm using a Nokia 445 Pro as my monitor, a SteelSeries 6Gv2 as my keyboard and my beloved Logitech MX300 as my mouse.

What do you like, and dislike, about CPM?
The unique and ever-so-challenging movement of CPM was the thing that got me into Quake when all my friends were playing CS 1.6, and until this day I still think it is the main reason I play CPM.
Second of all I've grown to love the community. I grew up amongst it and I don't think I will ever be able to leave.
What do I dislike about CPM? Hmm... I can't think of anything. :)

How would you describe your playing style? What are the advantages of playing with this style?
My style is quite aim-heavy and slow (+back) with a lot of focus on the LG and the RG.
The advantages of this style in my opinion are that I can dish out a considerable amount of damage in a short period of time if my aim is underestimated.
7.
What do you think the disadvantages, or weaknesses of your playing style are? And how do you compensate for these short-comings?
My rockets are terrible and I really suck at close-quarters combat. I'm quite easily frustrated and tend to give up and fool around after some time if things are not going my way. :)
Also my movement is not what it used to be and I often fail the easiest of jumps, leading to awkward situations and losing out on items I shouldn't lose out on.
How do I compensate. Just try and aim-whore the fuck out of everyone.

What maps would you say you have an advantage on, and what exactly separates you from the other players on this map?
CPM3A used to be my best map, but as of late I am beginning to doubt I'd stand a chance against the top players there. Given the chance I think I can perform well on any map, and I hope to prove that in the upcoming finals. ;)

Who is your all-time favorite CPM player, and why? How did this player influence your playing style?
Hmm, this is a toss-up between rat and koddy. I think I don't resemble either of them as a player, but I always admired their impeccable skill and sheer dominance in their prime. I'll go with rat.
10.
What is your favourite game mode, and why?
Team Death Match. What fascinates me most in TDM is the teamplay aspect in all its cruelty. No one can beat a team on their own and you need your teammates to be successful, whereas in some other modes one player can make all the difference whether your team excels or crumbles. I've always considered myself more as a team player than a dueller.

What things do you think the community needs to develop, to help CPMA grow?
More players, a better attitude towards new players, and more advertising. The cold truth is that a game as hard as CPMa will always have a hard time getting a big player base, because most people just give up when they cannot be the best instantly.

There seems to "eras" of players ( rat, aph, and vo0, the early stages, koddy from mid-section, finally players like HAL, gaiia, and memphis in the current era). Where do you think you would fit, and which player, from any era, do you think would pose the greatest challenge to you, and why?
The game has evolved from the early days by such proportions that comparisons drawn between the best from back then and the best players today are completely useless. Obviously, as my name stands there already I think it's clear which 'era' I belong in.
HAL_9000, and
memphis along with
fedor have always been my toughest opponents due to various reasons.
13.
How would you describe the changes in playing style of the years?
Back when the net code wasn't as good, and hitscan-weaponry wasn't as useful as they're today, rockets were the key to success. I envy the people who were able to be a part of the scene back in 'the Golden Ages', for I think that the ever-so-unpredictable and fast-paced rocket fights are a dozen times more appealing to a spectator than pin-point accuracy rails or 50% LG. But maybe that's just me. :)
Truth is, I would've gotten my ass handed to me by 95% percent of the community back then. That's just how bad my rockets are!

What would your advice be for new players who have never seen CPMA before, or have had limited exposure to it?
Don't give up if (when) you get raped and all hope seems lost. I see new players today have skills that took me 2-4 years to develop, yet they think that they're no good. Just suck it up and play some more! No pain, no gain.
15.
Overall, what are your expectations for this tournament?
I expect this tournament to mark some kind of new buzzing around the CPM community, as it is the biggest tournament we've had in terms of prizes in about what seems like an eternity. Also I think the fact that people had to qualify to earn their spot in the finals will make the event even more exciting, as the quality of the games will be orgasmic.

Who do you think will pose the biggest threat for you, and why?
HAL_9000. He is simply put the best dueller there is right now, and I think our overall head-to-head record is around 90%-10% in his favour.
His reflexes are inhuman and I have a excruciatingly hard time keeping up his twitchy movement and weird dodging patterns.

I think the Canadian powerhouses
Kwong-Lo and
gellehsak have good chances, if given the opportunity to play at least one match per Bo3 on North American soil. Also watch out for
n0rz; if he practices enough he is a solid contestant for the #1 spot.

Name is Andy, 27 years old, and I live in Ontario, Canada

What is your gaming background? How did you get into playing CPM?
I've played FPS games since about 10 years old or so, starting with Doom/Quake 1. From there as time progressed I just started playing other FPS games. Eventually I happened to stumble upon CPM when it was pre-1.0 (I think they were the 99y paks or something) and have been playing on and off since.

When did you start playing CPM, and how were you introduced to it?
I started probably in 2002. 2003. I think someone in QuakeWorld (can't remember who) had told me about a QW-like mod for Q3, so I checked it out.

What is your current computer setup? CPU? GFX Card? Monitor? Keyboard? Mouse?
Not sure about the CPU/GFX, some Quad-core Intel chip and an Nvidia card, I use a G1 and a Steelseries keyboard. 2233rz monitor.
5.
What do you like, and dislike, about CPM?
I like how fluid CPM is. I like how there are many play styles and options available. It doesn't have to played a single way. VQ3/QL players could jump in and play their style and do very well, same with Warsow, QW, Q2, any one that has played any fast-paced FPS game. You don't need to be the fastest, make all of the tricks, or have the best aim.
There is very little I dislike these days. Some maps maybe. But that really isn't directly related to CPM.

How would you describe your playing style? What are the advantages of playing with this style?
I think I'm fairly adaptable. I'd like to think I'm able to read opponents and outcomes fairly well. The obvious advantage is that I can more easily anticipate what will happen next and feel more sure about my choices.

What do you think the disadvantages, or weaknesses of your playing style are? And how do you compensate for these short-comings?
I'd say that the play style requires I have consistent aim, movement, etc. all the time. If i start predicting players to be in spots, I'll put myself in a position to make a particular shot. If I miss the shot and he's coming at me, then obviously I've now put myself at a disadvantage.
I suppose to compensate this kind of short-coming I rely on my movement to allow me to either dodge to give me more time or find a quick escape to regroup.

What maps would you say you have an advantage on, and what exactly separates you from the other players on this map?
CPM15 has always been considered my 'home' map by the community. I don't really know why, I think because when it first was really used back in Challenges I was one of the few players that could move swiftly on it. But what I really like about CPM15 is that you can really control the pace of the game. I feel fairly comfortable in all situations on this map, which is fairly advantageous when an opponent hopes you're running scared.

Who is your all-time favorite CPM player, and why? How did this player influence your playing style?
This is a pretty tough question. I'd have to say, all time,
Apheleon was probably my favorite CPM player. He was the one that showed me a lot of the ins and outs of the game, things I didn't think of when I first started. Without his help, I don't think I would have progressed as quickly as I did. I'm not sure if our playing styles are similar or not, but I'd say he helped me see the game in a way I wouldn't have thought of on my own.

What is your favourite game mode, and why?
Duel without a doubt. I've always liked to just go head-to-head against an opponent.

What things do you think the community needs to develop, to help CPMA grow?
Just more players willing to realize they can't earn kills like it's COD :)
Honestly, I think the toughest thing a game like CPM or QW has for it is the initial learning curve. Nobody wants to lose constantly or feel they aren't improving. But that is how we all have more or less started. Taking beatings and learning from those beatings.

I've probably played throughout all of these "eras" at some point or another, and I've always felt I've been at or near the top. I think it is assumed as time goes on, players generally get better, so it would make sense that the latest "era" is the strongest.
That being said, I'd say the greatest challenge from an active player would be
HAL. I think most players would say he would be the greatest challenge today. Unfortunately, I can't play him or any of the other top EU players on even terms, so it's difficult to gauge where I am in relation to them. I feel though that I have what it takes to be one of the best, if not the best at CPM.

How would you describe the changes in playing style of the years?
CPM when it was younger was a lot more about movement than it was about aim. You could really outclass an opponent if you could move that much better than them around the map.
However as time went on, hardware got better and faster. People could hit more. That forced players (like myself) to change their style a bit in order to compensate for this change. I wouldn't say the game has turned more into an aim-based game, but it's now a smarter game where you can't plow into rooms at 600+ UPS to try to get the jump on your opponent.

What would your advice be for new players who have never seen CPMA before, or have had limited exposure to it?
It's a tough game to get into. Even low-tier players that lose in the 30s/40s to top-tier players make you look silly. The best advice I can give is to stick to it, because we've all been there. It really is a learning process, and if you're willing to learn you should see some results.

Overall, what are your expectations for this tournament?
I expect to win a few games. It's really a tough call considering all of the top talent playing and my ping disadvantage. I'm just going to go in to the tournament and evaluate my opponents and try to prevent them from playing their strengths and exploit their weaknesses, but I won't be upset if I don't place well given the circumstances.

Who do you think will pose the biggest threat for you, and why?
Anyone in this tournament got here by either qualifying against a tough lineup, or being invited because they are excellent at this game, so I would consider everyone a threat. If I had to pick a single player: Hal.

Gaming background is most genres. Started with Quake1 moved through the quake games. CS, WOW...name it, I’ve tried it.

Umm... don't remember the year, but it was before the big WANSANITY TDM League. Some Quake 1 guys I knew asked me to try it out.

My PC is trash, like 3 ghz with 2gb of ram. Some shitty nvidia card. Monitor. I dont play with one...

What do you like, and dislike, about CPM?
I like the game style, movement, aim. I dislike cpm22

How would you describe your playing style? What are the advantages of playing with this style?
Umm, people would say I’m extremely slow and don’t move. I describe it as being in the right spot always and if I don’t move cause you are bad, then I don’t move. Advantages are not moving.

What do you think the disadvantages, or weaknesses of your playing style are? And how do you compensate for these short-comings?
Once again, not moving is my disadvantage. How I overcome this is by having a superior IQ to 99% of the players online, and well...also out aiming 99% of them as well :)

What maps would you say you have an advantage on, and what exactly separates you from the other players on this map?
Pick a map other than cpm22. I’m me, and that separates me from you. Because I > U.

Who is your all-time favorite CPM player, and why? How did this player influence your playing style?
Tough question. I liked
rat , great aim, great map control.

What is your favourite game mode, and why?
Duel, because when you lose it’s your fault. Don’t blame anyone except yourself.

What things do you think the community needs to develop, to help CPMA grow?
People need to grow up and learn to actually use their brain when they play e.g. just cause you are "attack" in CTF, does NOT MEAN you CANNOT KILL the guys in your base when you respawn. In reality, YOU SHOULD ALWAYS KEEP YOUR BASE SAFE EVEN IF YOU ARE THE ATTACKER. (just some things the community needs to work on)

HAL_9000...because they play a faster game which I don’t enjoy so much. Greatest challenge probably rat, because I’ve beat the rest on maps before. So I’m not overly concerned :D

How would you describe the changes in playing style of the years?
Umm, in the past people timed better and had a different way of attacking. Mind you the game was setup differently. With the changes from promode classic to the new promode, the play style just went with it.

What would your advice be for new players who have never seen CPMA before, or have had limited exposure to it?
Try to duel, you may get stomped sure...But you need to improve your 1 on 1 fighting, timing and movement skills to be competitive in team matches. Not enough people duel now-a-days thus the ctf and tdm matches take a hit. No one can time RA anymore or time a quad.

Overall, what are your expectations for this tournament?
I have liked the format so far. I am expecting a euro to win, basically since there are only 2 non euros playing and we are both ping fucked to begin with :P

Umm everyone I play. They are all good players and I have a minimum of 100 ping.

I am the darkhorse in this tournament. Not many Europeans know who I am. I was even told I would get destroyed in my qualifier (didn’t happen). Ping does suck, but maybe if they split servers this tournament will get a lot more interesting, really quickly.

What is your gaming background? How did you get into playing CPM?
Don't remeber, seems like it was in times of first Masters Cup. We playing q3 for fun with my friend Stan Serebryakov and then he told me about CPMA and we began to play it instead OSP. I remember how we download demos from challenge tv, watched first MC games.

When did you start playing CPM, and how were you introduced to it?
One day I wake up and understood that I must be Champion of ProMode. So in 2009 I join Russian ProMode Community and started training.

How would you describe your playing style? What are the advantages of playing with this style?
I have nice mechanical skills and reaction, so I prefer to play forward. You training attacks every time if you choose +f, it's very important. You begin to better navigate at high speeds.

What do you think the disadvantages, or weaknesses of your playing style are? And how do you compensate for these short-comings?
Often I playing too aggressive and do spectacular moments for public. I can easy lost control because of this. And ofc nervous. So I will try to be more calm and carefull.

What maps would you say you have an advantage on, and what exactly separates you from the other players on this map?
I think my best map is cpm22, cos I playing it 1000 times. :D

Who is your all-time favorite CPM player, and why? How did this player influence your playing style?
Of course
HAL_9000 and I want to play like him... maybe someday. :] He is great. Fast, powerfull, merciless, he just destroys you.

What is your favourite game mode, and why?
Favourite is 1v1. The most serious mode in my opinion.

What things do you think the community needs to develop, to help CPMA grow?
Nuzhno postroit' Zikkurat. :D Community needs more initiative people.

Hi, im Lari Laitinen i'm from Finland Helsinki.

What is your gaming background? How did you get into playing CPM?
I played like all games made before 96 for PC. (Surely I might have missed bout 3 games)

Played hl1 mod The Specialists and met
mew the amazingly amazing tricker and friend who made me play CPM (I had played all quakes but never even knew whats bunnyhopping until he taught me.)

What do you like, and dislike, about CPM?
Make xerp adjustable (It pulls models bit too far!) and scale models to bb like in ql. I love everything about CPM

How would you describe your playing style? What are the advantages of playing with this style?
Passive and dumb. Often unpredictable.

What do you think the disadvantages, or weaknesses of your playing style are? And how do you compensate for these short-comings?
I've practiced playing bad positions most of my time, I'm trying to learn to cope worst possible situations. But relying on aim too much often fails.

What maps would you say you have an advantage on, and what exactly separates you from the other players on this map?
cpm3a, I know few tricks there and different way of moving than most.

mew: most creative quaker!
koddy: flawless 1v1
mew and koddy, mew taught to think and predict other people’s minds in game, koddy taught me how useful dodging is, so they both teached me to dodge.

2v2, 1v1 with solidarity!

People play more stunt style nowdays... I dislike that.

Learn theory and analyze people psychologically in smallest and largest way possible. :D

No idea.

I like the movement in dislike the weird obsession of duel players with small maps.

How would you describe your playing style? What are the advantages of playing with this style?
I call it awkward inactive grandpa style. The advantage of being terrible (which is essential to that style) is that people don't seem to expect it and are completely caught off guard when i do stupid moves.

What do you think the disadvantages, or weaknesses of your playing style are? And how do you compensate for these short-comings?
Being terrible is probably the biggest disadvantage. I don't, I just go with the flow.

Clearly cpm3a cause I have the most playing experience on that map compared to pretty much any other cpm duel player ever in the history of the world.
