The austrian Quakeworld player

Defcon5 will release his anticipated Quakeworld movie tonight at 15:00 CDT in the irc channel #qw.at on Quakenet. The movie is about the Quakeworld community and its dedication to a game which is already over 16 years old. Top players of the Quakeworld scene were interviewed at QHLAN15 answering lots of questions about the the scene and the fascination of the game.

Everyone is welcome to celebrate together with the movie maker and the Quakeworld community the release of the movie:

Hey guys, just want to say a Big thanks to all the teams that have signed up, with 40 in total, we think this is a really good turn out and hope you guys will enjoy the up coming games, HoQLeagues TDM Round 1 is tomorrow 14:00 CST, 16 February 2012, please get your buts in

#hoqleagues and make sure you are ready to play and have a sub on standby, if your not ready to play make sure you use your wildcard 1 hour before the match or it will be default loss.

In the wake of the CSN CTF Invite Cup, which featured some of the best and most prominent ctf teams in Europe, the time has come for us to open up the registration to everyone. After the announcement of the upcoming LAN in Eidhoven, we want to give all teams a chance to warm-up and square off versus each other, and see how they match up against others.

The cup will be held on February 12th, at 16h CET, the registrations start now and last until February 12th, 15h CET, when you will have to manually check in within a 1 hour time window to be a registered participant of the cup. Top 4 seeds are reserved for the teams that participated in the Invite Cup; Drugs & Porn (1), Expendables (2), Unknown (3) and k1ck (4).

To participate, you need an account on the CSN website (look among links on the bottom).

Update: Notable signups: Drugs & Porn, The Expendables, Pros of Pain & ctfmix (noctis, uwu, q50, km/betija & fragmaster)

Update #2: The lower bracket finals and grand finals are rescheduled to next week, the schedule will be updated once all the teams find a suitable date. Drugs & Porn and Pros of Pain will be facing off in a lower bracket best-of-3 and the winner goes to face The Expendables in grand finals best-of-5.

How to export QL maps to 3D format (41 comments)

Since I got this question asked many times, I figured I would write an article instead and point people here.

This process describes how to convert Quake Live maps into 3D formats.

Tools

- Quake Live Decembler (quakelivedec.exe)
- An HEX editor (HHD HEX Editor Neo)
- Any version of radiant (GTK 1.4, 1.5, net, ...)
- q3map2.exe

Steps

Let assume you want to convert campgrounds (dm6).

1. Fetch 'campgrounds.pk3' inside '...\AppData\LocalLow\id Software\quakelive\baseq3'

2. In a command prompt windows do:

quakelivedec.exe campgrounds.pk3 campgrounds.zip

3. Extract the zip content and fetch 'campgrounds.bsp'

4. Open it with the HEX editor and change the fifth byte from '2f' to '2e'. This converts the BSP version back to Q3.

5. In a command prompt windows do:

q3map2.exe -convert -format map campgrounds.bsp

This will generate a 'campgrounds.map'

6. Open the map in radiant. Filter the geometry off (toggle with alt + 1) select all entities and delete them. Around the map, create a brush box with the shader 'caulk'. Hollow the brush and save.

7. Create an 'info_player_start' anywhere in the map. Save.

8. In a command prompt windows do:

q3map2.exe -game quake3 -meta -patchmeta -subdivisions 2 -v campgrounds.map
q3map2.exe -convert -format ase -v campgrounds.bsp

This will generate 'campgrounds.ase', which can be read in most 3D applications.

9. The textures are exported as relative path assuming that the map is located in the folder 'maps' of QL tree. Repeat step 2. for all pk3 files. You can use a batch file like this:

for %%i In (" ...\AppData\LocalLow\id Software\quakelive\baseq3\"*.pk3) do quakelivedec "...\AppData\LocalLow\id Software\quakelive\baseq3\%%~nxi" "destinationfolder\zzz-%%~nxi.zip"

Extract all the files, and put the generated 'campgrounds.ase' inside the folder. Your 3D application should now find the textures.

Quake is Alive Tournament FINALS (19 comments)

Quake is Alive hosted by XTC Gaming, South Africa's first Quake Live Duel tournament in a very long time is planning on having all it's final games played today. There are only a few games left and they will be on stream.

Shase and

Ph4ntom met up in the Winner Bracket Final and Ph4ntom managed to narrowly beat Shase. The Losers bracket final will be between Shase and

Detrony.

There will be some div B games happening too, which has one of ESReality's regulars,

tB0nE, waiting in the grand final for a challenger from the loser bracket.

European Quake League 15 - Signups! (5 comments)

EQL is back with a new season of QuakeWorld TDM! Just as the last season the maps will be TB3 (the best/big 3) with surely some dramatic action during the season. The signups end the 26th of february!

The division system will be tweaked for the upcoming season and you can read the whole story HERE! Also some information about the signups, length of the season etc can be found in the same post, so be sure to check it out!

Other events coming up on the qw-scene:
At the same time as the information about EQL15 signups was released, it was also announced that EQL16 will have the extended pool of maps which was supposed to be in EQL15. Due to EQL:Kenya (custom map league) beeing postponed until the end of EQL15 instead of beeing played before it there was some map issues on which to be chosen.
EQL:Pro will also return later this spring with the hottest of the hot action! The first season was a success and therefor it will be played once a year in the future aswell!
