As stated in my previous post, the

Czech Quake guys are in the process of organising the Euro Open Cup. The deadline to sign up was set for today. But because the scheduling of the first games will begin next week, there are a few extra days left for anyone else who wishes to enter. The new deadline is set on the 24th October at midnight!

Registration

The basic groups will be announced on Saturday 25th of October and players will be free to play their matches from the 26th of October. After the group stage, a single elimination playoff will take place.

Right now, there are only 11 players signed up for

Quake 4 and 33 players for

Quake Live. You can check out the current sign-ups list on quake.cz. Considering the size of the current communities for these games it's quite a good turn-out, but we would like to see some more players in this season of the Euro Open Cup and the first season ever for Quake Live. The Rules will be updated during this week.

fragster.de interviewed the Swedish Quake star Magnus "fox" Olsson. Find out what he has to say about the upcoming event, his friendship with Johan "Toxic" Quick and why he plays with inverted sound.

Fragster: What is your opinion on the comeback of toxic? Only a few might know him as good as you know him. Do you think he will be able to continue his past successes? And what did he do the whole time?

fox: Well, he's a good friend and I'm happy to be travelling with him again. Damn shame that we always get put in the same groups etc. or face each other early in the brackets :) We are pretty sick of it. Toxic has been quite active in QuakeLive for a while so I won't underestimate him. Looking forward to watching him play versus Rapha.

November 2008 will see the most prestigious cyber championship on CIS territory, this will be the 23rd ASUS Open where best regional teams band together. The autumn competition will follow a <Team Spirit> concept and include only team disciplines, which is a thoughtful step on the rocky path of teams and gamers community consolidation.

Expected large scale competitions in: Call of Duty 4, Counter-Strike, DotA and Quake-fest. This year we are going to introduce the first women Counter-Strike competition!

link1n: HAHAHA :D To be honest, we can't really give a good answer when you're traveling about a tournament. I mean you have no time to go in a great restaurant or something like that, so of course food is gonna be "blehh" and I'll say the same thing about American food, I mostly eat hamburgers. So yeah, American food is bleh and French food owns the planet! FROOOMAGGGEEE!

GGL Wire has reviewed Razer's newest entry into the mouse mat market: The Goliathus, which comes in Speed and Control editions.

Which one is better? Here's a snippet.

Just like in 2006, I have to question the naming of these mouse mats. The Speed Edition, which is nice and smooth, has a very fine-textured weave that is always in contact with a large area of your mouse feet. The Control Edition, which is pitted, naturally doesn’t touch as much of your mouse feet.

SK.Rapha before the next ESWC event. Rapha is talking about his preparation for the Masters of Athens, which consists of bootcamping with

srs.av3k in

Cologne, and some other topics.

At the grand final you played on TFTs and many players didn't perform very well because of that. Your thoughts about that? Will it be much more different on CRTs now?

SK.Rapha: I think rockets will be less effective :/ I liked the way the game felt at the finals. It didn’t feel as LG/Rail dominant, felt a bit like OSP. But now I think the game will be a bit quicker again but who knows.

Gamerbase, run by our very own Sujoy Roy and Dominic Mulroy has just been aquired by HMV, both have been retained by HMV in a senior managerial capacity.

Gamerbase opened its doors back in December 2007 at HMV’s Trocadero store in London’s Piccadilly Circus giving a boost to HMV games sales. This concept will now be adopted though-out several more stores over the next 12 months. The first of these will be sited in HMV’s Manchester Market Street superstore and will feature over fifty player units occupying some 2,000 sq.ft., and is due to open in time for Christmas.

Statement from Dominic Mulroy:

“We’re delighted and excited to bring Gamerbase into the HMV fold. Over the past year we’ve seen how it’s helped to attract in new customers into the Trocadero store while also complementing its wider games offer”. He adds: “Gamerbase is passionate about enabling gaming enthusiasts to enjoy a premium-quality experience, while also offering customers the facility to purchase the very games they are playing directly from the store. We believe this development provides an excellent platform for HMV to connect with customers they may not always have reached in the past.”

London, UK. – October 13th 2008. HMV today announces its acquisition of Gamerbase Limited, a state-of-the-art multiplayer gaming company.

Gamerbase first opened its doors inside HMV’s Trocadero store in London’s Piccadilly Circus, last December 2007 on a concession basis. This new retail concept aimed to provide HMV customers with an unrivalled gaming experience and a ‘try before you buy’ opportunity to sample new release games on PC and console formats ahead of purchase.

Following a successful Trocadero trial, which has also seen a lift in the store’s games software sales, HMV now plans to site this state-of-the-art gaming centre within several more of its stores around the country over the next twelve months and beyond.

Full details will be announced in due course, but the first of these will be sited in HMV’s Manchester Market Street superstore. The HMV Manchester Gamerbase will be located on the store’s lower ground adjacent to the newly refurbished Games department, which has recently moved down from the first floor. The new state-of-the-art facility will feature over fifty player units occupying some 2,000 sq.ft., and is due to open in time for Christmas.

This development of the Gamerbase format within HMV, including the Manchester launch, will be led by the company’s co-founders, Dominic Mulroy and Sujoy Roy, who have been retained by HMV in a senior managerial capacity.

Tim Ellis, HMV Head of Games, agrees: “We’ve been developing our games offer in a number of ways, and we see instore gaming as an important strand in our overall strategy.” He adds: “Where we roll them out, we’ll be looking to locate the Gamerbase centres next to our games departments to bring the whole offer together for our customers – so if someone’s enjoyed playing a game online, they can pre-order or purchase it there and then.” Ellis goes on: “The Trocadero Gamerbase has gone down really well – even games publishers and technology partners have been using it for product promotion and launches, and quite a few companies have been hiring it for corporate hospitality and staff events.”

HMV MD Simon Fox comments: "A key element of HMV's ‘get closer’ strategy is to continually improve the in-store experience for our customers – establishing our stores as multi-channel, interactive destinations and bringing to life the product that they’re so passionate about. HMV is uniquely placed in entertainment retailing to bring this about.” Fox continues: “With Games becoming an increasingly significant part of our product mix, we’re delighted to announce that Gamerbase is now a part of the HMV Offer, demonstrating our commitment to Games, and enabling us to develop a premium-quality gaming experience. Dominic Mulroy continues: “The model of a gaming cyber centre has been extended to include official competitions and events staged by games publishers, where gamers can prove their skills for a variety of fantastic prizes. So far, in 2008, Gamerbase has hosted events with a combined prize value in excess of £300,000. As Gamerbase expands around the country this will open up great opportunities for HMV to become involved in regional and national competitions, which, of course, will benefit the games industry as a whole.”
